The Special Court for Sierra Leone is an independent judicial body set up to ‘’try those how bear greatest responsibility’’ for serious violations, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Sierra Leone Civil War which began in 1991 and was declared officially over on 18 January 2002.

Thriteen indictments were issued by the Prosecutor in 2003. Two of those were subsequently withdrawn in December 2003 due to the death of the accused. The trials of three former leasders of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), two of the Civil Defence Forces (CDF) and three former leaders  of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) have been completed, including the appeals. This work describes the work of the tribunal and provides an extensive collection of basic materials on the Court.
